This was a 40 mile road race on very narrow rolling roads with a center line rule. The start for the 1/2/3 women and Cat 4 women was 8:10am, the weather, Very Windy and pretty cold! Due to the early start we traveled down the night before, but it still meant our alarms went off at 5:30am to get the race with enough time to register, decide on layers and do some kind of warm up.
The race started with a neutral role out of a couple of miles then it turned a left corner and from there the race was on 5 x 8mile laps. The road was extremely narrow and center line rule was in place so moving up through the pack proved extremely difficult, the course was not super hilly most were short rollers but the pace of the race seemed to be very inconsistent, slowing and jostling around. The windy conditions proved the deciding factor in any tactics (or lack of), with the majority of the race being strong crosswinds, one tail wind segment and then a long rolling headwind stretch. A few attacks did occur but they were easily bridged and the pack stayed together for what was going to be a sketchy sprint into a strong crosswind.
Both Dana and I got around the final corner relatively high up the peleton and the pace ramped up, I found a good inside wheel but then she moved across leaving me arriving at the front of the group way too soon for me to initiate any successful sprint. As the sprint started up around me I jumped and then its seemed like a slow motion battle with the wind to move in a forward direction, with one rider leaning into my shoulder and another behind her hitting the side of the road I was just glad that both Dana and I crossed the finish line upright and ready to race another day.
