Race Type: UCI Category 1.1 Road Race- 60 miles (5 laps around a 12 mile course)
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Rider: Deborah Leedale-Brown, Colleen
Gulick, Andrea Brennan, and guest riders Nikki Theimann
On the first weekend in June the team undertook the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic Road Race. The weekend began on Saturday with registration and a pre-ride of the course (courtesy of Jeff). On the pre-ride the ladies of EPS/CSS stopped by Cadence bike shop to support women’s racing at the meet and greet presented by Fuji Bicycles. After the ride we traveled to Deb’s house to recover and prep for Sunday’s race.
Sunday’s race had a star studded field of Chinese, Italian, New Zealand, Canadian, and American pros (totaling 123 entries, the same as the pro men’s field). The team showed their strength and training while riding up the Manayunk Wall and Lemon Hill. The race was incredibly challenging with a 44mph downhill (the fall after the wall), 1km incredibly steep Manayunk wall, and 30mph straight away on Kelley Drive. Nikki, our honorary EPS/CSS rider for the weekend, finished 119th. Deb rode her way to a 105th place finish. Andrea was in the field for the majority of the race and later found herself in a strong chase group, finishing 94th. Colleen, the youngest rider in the race, finished in a chase group at 67th place. It is an honor and a privilege for the team to be part of such a prestigious race.
We could not have done this race without the incredible help from Teresa, Cristina, Andrew Brennan (an extraordinary feeder!), Ken and Jeff. Another thank you goes out to Deb and her family for allowing us to overtake her house and fridge for the weekend. Jo and Barb were amazing supporters, cheering us up the wall all morning.
