Race: NJ Masters Road Race Championships
Location: Elmwood, NJ
Rider(s): Andy Maher, Barb Statton, Maryanne Caruso
Elwood, NJ was the location for this years Masters State Road Race. The course was a 15.5 mile flat loop with five turns. The women were placed with the 55+ men and the distance for all fields was 4 laps, 62 miles.
After a short warm up we were on the line and ready to roll. Racing with the men in such a big field was a new and interesting experience for me and took me a lap to get comfortable. Barb clearly had no issues with the size of the group and was riding strong towards the front. There were a few attacks in the first two laps but no breaks were established and the race stayed together.
Going into the last two turns riders were jockeying for positions and the paced picked up. I moved closer to the wheel I wanted, just 2-3 bike lengths ahead but wasn't able to hold my position as the sprint started. Getting in the mix with the men was a little hairy! In hind sight I wished I was a little more aggressive but it was a great learning experience. Kudo's to Maryanne for her perseverance and a strong finish.
Andy Maher-3rd place
Maryanne Caruso-8th place
