Race: Tour of Somerville-Criterium
Location: Somerville, NJ
Rider(s): Monica Volk, Colleen Gulick, Carren Stika
Somerville is an annually anticipated event, a prestigious east coast race always on Memorial Day. Having been apart of the spectating atmosphere for the past couple years it was exciting to finally be able to race it and I knew what to expect, a four corner crit and accompanied by hot weather. This was also the first race that all the elite members of the Riptide team were finally together with Colleen Gulick back from California. Deb, although not racing because of a crash couple days earlier, also came along with other riptide members to cheer on the squad.
Colleen was announced in call ups and the rest of the field shortly followed. The blow of the whistle started the race and the women were off. The long home and back stretches were where most of the action happened, riders shuffled their way into new positions and attacks were made. A head/cross wind in the back straight made it difficult for any breakaway to become very established, a notably hard feat on this course. I raced aggressively trying to close gaps to be in good position to lead out Colleen in the final sprint.
Even after crossing the finish line every lap the finish was still very deceiving. The finish was so long being about 400m from the final corner, the whole sprint to the line felt like slow motion. The team came out with two successful top tens for the day; this was a great showing for the New Jersey based team.
Monica Volk – 8th
Colleen Gulick – 10th
