U.S. Sprint camp recap
Rider: Colleen Gulick
Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado
Date: April 13-26
Event type: track sprint camp
On Monday I returned from the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs where I spent the last two weeks with 17 other male and female sprinters attempting to qualify for future international events with USA cycling. Over the course of the two weeks we went through extensive testing for body composition, in the gym, and on the track. When we weren't testing we could be found hanging out in the cafeteria or working on homework.
The weather threw us all for a loop, with temperatures ranging from 30 degrees and snowing to 75 and sunny. However, I was sure to give it 100% and try my best to represent Riptide P/b Shebell and Shebell.
The last two days we ran through mock racing strategies. On Friday we did a complete sprint tournament complete with 200m qualifiers and a typical bracket for the 8 women racers. Over the course of 7 sprints I worked my way up the bracket into the gold medal ride. Madeline and I were pretty evenly matched, taking one ride each in the first two rounds. In the final ride I came up short, but still earned 2nd place in the tournament... My first sprint tournament since junior nationals in 2009. Haha. The next day we did a mock Keirin tournament. Both men and women were in the tournament together. Top 3 in the first round advanced to the finals. I placed fourth in our mixed round... Qualifying me for the semifinal ride. Our semifinal ride was comprised completely of women and I was lucky enough to secure the win in the semifinal ride.
The next day I made the two day drive back to Los Angeles.... Spending the night in Vegas along the 16 hour drive (seemed like a fun break point). :) overall I am extremely happy with my camp performance. After only sprinting for 4 months I am extremely pleased with my progress and looking forward to the rest of the season.
