Race: Mount Joy Road Race, Cat 3/4 Women
Location: Mount Joy, PA
Rider(s): Alli McCabe, Evely Korbich
The morning of May 30th found myself, Alli, and nine other women ready to start the day’s event of four laps around the rolling, 11 kilometer course that was the Mount Joy Road Race. We rolled out of the staging area at an easy pace that soon picked up as we neared the back of the course. Luckily, Alli and I had pre-ridden the course and knew that the “backstretch” of the course contained a short, brutally steep hill that was sure to be a game-changer. Keeping this in mind, Alli approached the hill at the front of the pack and was able to conserve energy as she drifted slowly to the back towards the top of the hill. I stayed towards the front for most of the first lap because I was unsure if this would be a course where a breakaway would succeed and wanted to be on the lookout. As the pack headed into a second lap, the pace picked up and Alli found herself at the back as the pack began the steep climb. Unfortunately, the high pace caused Alli to fall off the back and finish the end of her second lap and the entire third lab by herself before the officials pulled her from the race. After the second time up the hill only 9 riders were left and we stayed together, with no major attacks, for the next two and a half laps. When the finish line came in to view on the last lap, no one was trying to get away, which would mean an all-out sprint finish. I wanted to avoid one of those, so a little before the 200 meter mark I jumped around the group. It turned out that one other rider had more to give than I did so she took the win ahead of the pack while I battled for second at the line and managed to grab it by half a wheel-length.
