Race: H2H Race #5, The Lewis Morris Challenge
Location: Morristown, NJ
Rider(s): Danielle Ferland
The day started off in a kind of panicked haze – it was one of those kinds of weekends where you’re feeling much less than 100% and the rain made things feel that much less appealing. Realizing I had slept through my alarms and had about a half hour to get my bum out the door, I made a mad dash to eat, get dressed, and head out for enough time for a decent warm up before the race. Unfortunately, forgetting to transfer my mountain bike shoes from my car to the car I would be riding in became the causality of my scramble, which I wouldn’t realize until reaching registration.
Without enough time to retrieve my shoes, my new mission became finding flat pedals and fix the front disc brake from rubbing on itself on my bike. The mechanic at the starting line was able to fix the brake well enough for the race, but no one seemed to have flat pedals. I contemplated just trying the course with the SPD pedals… but with the rain still coming down, my sneakers slipped around far too much. Thankfully, a Scott demo van was able to track down some flat pedals they had on a bike they were lending out, swapped them onto my bike so I could join the starting line and with about a minute to spare, off I went!
Having pre-ridden the course a few days before, I knew what I was in for. The majority of the course is a twisting single track with moderately technical portions. There were a few good climbs and descents, tight corners and some small logs to hop over. Roots and the wet conditions made for the most challenging bits of the race for me since my feet would bounce and slip off the flats, not being able to be clipped in. Apparently, my bike was also not feeling at its prime either – the chain popped off the gears twice. But! Drenched and covered in head to toe mud, I successfully completed the 6+ mile course with a huge smile.
All in all, it was a rainy and muddy day and although my shins were a little worse for wear, I had a blast. With all things considered, I was able to place 7 out of 10 in my category which is much better than taking a DNS like I was afraid I might have to do. Moral of the story: don’t forget your shoes!!!
