Friday was a long day for team eps/CSS p/b Shebell and Shebell. My day of racing began at 10am with UCI sprint qualifiers. There was a stacked field of 24 women racers with the Dutch, New Zealand, Great Britain, American and Canadian national teams all present. The seeding began with 200m time trials, where the top 18 women were allowed to continue in the tournament with the remaining 6 riders packing up and going home after one short effort. I rode a personal best of 12.2 seconds, securing me a 15th seed and spot in the sprint bracket. The meat of the field was between 12.0 and 12.2 so I was happy to be in the range of competition after switching to sprinting only 5 months ago (& one of the few Americans that qualified). Unfortunately the bracket matched me up against the Dutch national team rider in the first round, who is one of the top sprinters in the world. I gave it a good run but, as expected, I fell a bit short in the first round, placing me in the repicage (or "second chance" round). With 3 riders in my heat I made an unfortunate tactical error, causing me to get second by a matter of inches. So, after 5 hours of morning racing my sprint tournament was concluded with a 15th place in my first UCI sprint tournament... Earning me valuable UCI points for World Cup qualification.
In the evening Monica and I had a 12 lap preme race, where we placed 4th and 5th respectively. Then the UCI 10km points race, with a field of almost 30 women. Monica and I were both in the lead group the lapped the field. Unfortunately after bridging to the break away my sprinter legs weren't having another effort so I finished 15th, while Monica's enduro self held on for a top 12 finish. :) overall, I am happy with my solid improvement in my 200 time, and Monica should be very proud to have raced such a good scratch and preme race. Next Friday will be another UCI track night where I hope to make my mark in the Keirin, my favorite event, and earn some of the 90 required UCI points for a World Cup event. :) as always, thank you to our amazing sponsors, while Monica and I both sported our matching ask a from miles ahead, and our orange helmets made it easy to pick each other out the pack. :)
