Race: Emrick Boulevard Criterium

The Women’s Open and Category 4 fields of the Emrick Boulevard Crit took to the line just as the sun broke out of the rain clouds that had hidden it all morning. The course was wide-open and lovely with only a few scattered manhole covers so we were able to start out pretty fast. Most of the 17 women racing did not have teammates but there was one team that had four strong riders and from the very beginning of the race they began to go off the front, one by one, and make the rest of the pack chase them down. The first half of the 21 lap race was spent in this manner so the pack was strung out for much of the time. Then, with about 9 laps to go we found ourselves in a lull and the pace eased off for a few minutes before the barrage began again. The pause had given everyone a chance to recuperate but that also helped the attacking ladies and the last attack was even stronger than the previous ones. The lady on the attack managed to stay away until just about 4 laps to go and once she was caught her team didn’t send off any more riders. The pace became stagnant as no one wanted to pull for too long and the strong team was at the back, plotting. When the strong team started to filter towards the front as the race wound down it was obvious that there was going to be a lead-out train for the sprint, so I got on the wheel of the last rider and waited. As it turned out, my logic was correct. However, the last lady on the train seemed to be the “door” to hold back the pack while the rest of her team sprinted and I was stuck against the curb behind her as we made our way onto the finishing stretch. I managed to squeeze around her with just enough of the sprint left to catch up to another rider and pass her on the line to secure 6th place.
