Race: Freedom Crit Women’s 1/2/3
Location: Sterling, NJ
Rider(s): Monica Volk, Deborah Leedale Brown, Carren Stika and Andy Maher
EPS/CSS Riptide Cycling showed up in full force at the local Freedom Crit in New Jersey with 3 of its elite riders and the support of Andy Maher, a strong cat-3. It was a fairly small field so the pressure was on Riptide and we were excited. Freedom Crit is a perfect 4-corner crit, with very few hazards and a great USA Cycling set-up with an announcer and everything. Payout went 10-deep with premes going off every couple laps! To our surprise, Laura Van Gilder came back from racing in Chicago to show us just how strong she is. The girls worked together well to keep the pace up and then the preme’s started flying. First one went to Monica. Then on the second one, LVG used the preme to catapult an attack leading to a solo breakaway. Then Masha Schneider got away and Riptide tried joining her with our fiery Monica, but Masha had gotten too much of a heads start. Andy, Deb, and Carren all worked to block the other riders in the peloton from chasing down the solo breakaway riders who never linked up. Those 3 had hard solo rides the rest of the race in the grueling sun and heat, making the blocking all that more impressive. One more field preme was won by Deborah. At one point, Monica was in sight, giving the peloton a hunger for chasing, but the Riptide defense kept her at bay until she was out of sight again and secured the 3rd place position on the podium. Coming into the final lap, Andy and Carren set up a pain train and brought Deborah in with a solid 4th place, holding off the other sprinters.
