Date; July 4,5, 2015
Race Name; Regional Masters Track Championships
Location; Valley Preferred Cycling Center, Trexlertown, PA
Rider; Jo Johnson
Rain arrived early and caused a 3hr 15 minute rain delay.
The program is an Omnium of 4 race events the first day and non Omnium events on the second day. The Saturday Omnium program included the Flying Lap, the 2k Individual Pursuit, a 12 lap Points race with points awarded each 4th lap and finally the Scratch race with points awarded for finish position. There is a flurry of activity between races as riders change handlebars and gears. A wild scene.
For the Flying lap, we are pushed out onto the track with one warm up lap to reach speed then come out of turn 3, the bell sounds and you ramp up like crazy to dive down from turn 4 to the apex of turn 1 and continue as fast as you can all the way around to the start/finish line. Whew! When results are posted the anxious riders gather. My time is a new PB! Yea!
The 2k Individual Pursuit is a 6 lap pure energy drain. The clouds are starting to come back some and the air is heavy and humid. Even so, I manage to stay fairly steady, not loose too much time over the last laps and do well to finish 1 second off my PB.
The mass start races are next with the 12 lap points race first up. I stay with the 2 fast gals though I end up leading before the bell lap to sprint for points but manage to hang in behind the gals to gain 2 third place points on the first 2 sprints. Now with 2 laps to go, I go up the banking at turn 4 and dive down over the riders with 2 laps to go, around one lap and look back and they are right behind, I pull up track and come back down in 3rd to stay on their wheels in 3rd place, then with more effort, I come along side the 2nd place rider and into turn 4 I am just even but gaining. Cross the line in second by half a wheel. Whew! Fun
Now time to get ready for the last race, the Scratch race which is shortened by nightfall. This race was a sprint from the start. I quickly overtake one gal to gain 3rd position and hang on to finish in 3rd overall.
Sunday was the Flying 200, Match sprints and Team Pursuit and Team Sprints. I did the Flying 200 but with no other competition, I did not do the match sprints.
Overall a great weekend, lots more technique practice and see old friends and make new ones.
