Race: Arsenal Criterium
Location; Philadelphia, PA/ The Navy Yard
Rider: Jo Johnson
This location and race is new to me and really close in distance being only 25 miles from home. The parking is ample and the atmosphere fun. The road surface is not too bad once you know where the man hole covers are and the rough surface in the last corner. A big incentive was the 30 minute free clinic which over 30 riders participated in. Four coaches were on hand to guide the riders through. There are always reminders of what you should do and usually some new tips to learn. A worthwhile time spent. It shortly was time to race for the Cat 4 Women. There were approximately 18 of us for this 30 minute race. After the start, I began to move up through the group and sat 5th wheel for the first lap, then in the top 10 for the next several laps but gradually i drifted back and thought I was alone behind the main pack. I turned around and saw 2 other riders sitting on. So I pulled off and let them through. We 3 ended up rotating around the rest of the race. I found sections where I felt strongest and could pull more and sections where I was feeling less aggressive. Like some of the turns. With 3 laps to go, I decided to pull off and let the youngsters work in front thinking I could give a good acceleration at the end. On the last lap, one of the youngsters jumped before the last turn and I went after her with the other youngster next to me. We did a drag race to the line but she had just a bit more than I did. It was a safe and good race. I will want to put this one on the calendar next year.
Many thanks to all the sponsors who help make this happen; EPS/ CSS pb Shebell and Shebell, Brielle Cyclery, Cannondale, Powertap, Castelli, Honey Stinger, OSMO nutrition and all the others. Special thank you to Team Manager, Teresa Di Sessa Johnson for all her efforts.
Result; not the last as I passed at least one rider.
