A large showing of fans drove from all over, even as far as Lancaster, PA to see the one and the only Jens Voigt at the Trek Store of Middletown, NJ. Our sponsor shop hosted the professional cyclist as part of Jens’ new role as the Trek Ambassador and man is he good at it! It was standing room only and almost every attendee bought a t-shirt, hat or Trek jersey. In preparation, a couple Riptide ladies arrived early to help set up for the event. Nerves were high as we anticipated his grand entrance, but when he walked in, hand in hand with store owner Kathy Penna, everyone’s jealousy began and smiles went ear to ear. As a welcoming gift, Kathy gave him a lottery ticket for the $564 million jackpot and they agreed if he won, they would split the winnings 50:50 and he would take Kathy on his safari documentary adventure (a childhood dream of his), but if Kathy’s ticket won, she would give him “some.” Unfortunately Jens didn’t win.
The night included a question and answer session where Jens Voigt gave everyone something hilarious, something insightful, and something encouraging to remember. We learned how the man from East Germany first got into cycling (he was a super hyper kid and needed a proper energy relief) to what it’s like bringing his son to his own races. “People come up to chat and I just want to pin my son’s number on his jersey and pump up his tires. I just want to be a dad.” After having what felt like an intimate living room family heart to heart, Jens signed an autographed poster and took photos with every person in the room. He gave us each this awesome undivided attention and was an easygoing, down to earth kind of guy. The Riptide team was given some extra special attention during a team photo-op with the Pro, leaving most of us with our hearts fluttering for the man that is Jens Voigt. We want to thank the Trek Store for putting on the amazing event and for Trek Bicycles for loaning us Jens Voigt for the night and for especially Jens Voigt himself! You have many more fans for life here in New Jersey! Thank you for coming all the way from Germany for us!
