Race report: Race: CBR Criterium
Location: Carson, CA
Category: Women’s 1/2/3
The first race of the California season has officially concluded. One of the things I love about California racing is that I can usually ride to and from the races from my apartment. So, yesterday I rolled over to Carson and raced the CBR Criterium. The women’s 1/2/3 race was 40 minutes long on a 4 corner crit course. It was a great, fast paced race that went from the gun. There were 5 cash premes throughout the race. I sprinted for, and earned the second preme, which was less than ten minutes into the race. After the preme there was a counter attack of two women that I joined. We stayed away for the remaining 30 minutes of the race, during which I earned another preme. Our break finished a minute and twenty seconds up on the field. One of the women attacked the break with two laps to go. I tried to chase but was caught in no-mans land and finished 2nd, notching a podium in the new kit. : ) Thank you to our sponsors for making our team’s racing possible. I am thrilled to be able to represent Riptide-Cawes on the west coast and I’m looking forward to the next race. Until then, happy training everyone. : )
Race Date: January 23, 2016
Race Name/Type: A Race Against Time/ Time Trial
Location: Picacho Peak, AZ
Rider: Jo Johnson
On a windy morning I took off with a 10-15 mph tail/cross wind from the SE heading north on the frontage road of I-10 to the turn around. Ramping up speed steadily until 23 mph then upped it to 25 and then to 26 which I could hold really easily. Passed my 30 second rider at the 5 minute mark and continued to the turn around then the return leg into the brick wall. The wind was enough to almost grind you to a halt. Finding the gear to keep a steady pace was a challenge but I kept looking for it. What was a 15 minute trip to the turn around became a 25 minute trip back to the finish line and of course the road elevation increased a couple hundred feet all the way back too. But I managed to pace myself ok and not burn myself up totally in either direction.
This race is presented by Team Colleen in honor of a team member, Colleen, who fought a brave fight against cancer but lost her life. The proceeds of this event will go to cancer survivors.
Result: 3rd Masters Women 65-69
Today was the day our 2016 Kits were to be revealed to the team and our fans. Well, that didn't happen since most of the tri-state area was hit by our first snow storm of the year. This was no small storm with areas receiving over 28" of snow. I had all the new Castelli kits, Bontrager cycling shoes and new Lazer Z1 helmets ready to be handed out to the race team. Sarah and I were super excited to reveal the kits that took many hours to come up with the perfect design. I have to admit our Designer Cherylin Tiefel kicked butt on these. This years kit incorporated the green from Cawes and boy was I happy about that. I love Green!
Sarah and I decided to keep the team and our fans in suspense until our kit reveal day. With so many asking and wondering what they looked like we decided its time to get the kits out there for everyone to see. Plus we have our out of state riders racing in them this weekend as well.
I decided to have a little fun on this snow day to reveal the kits to my teammates and fans in an unconventional way.
Here I am contemplating which bike would be best to trek through 28" of snow, hehe see what I did there... I am also sporting my new Castelli Thermal jacket to keep me warm while I investigate the situation.
I decide to give my new Trek Emonda SLR a shot. Why not right? To keep me safe I am wearing my new Lazer z1 MIPS helmet.
With much disappointment and several failed attempts I knew the Trek Emonda was not cut out for the task.
A mountain bike would surely be more fit for these conditions so I grabbed my Trek Top Fuel.
I was so excited that I forgot my helmet inside.
Here I go!!!
It didn't work! :(
It was time to bring the Trek Top Fuel back in and come up with another plan!
Now what!? The only thing left to do was have fun in the snow.
Well there you have it. Our 2016 Castelli Kits designed by Cherylin Tiefel with the help of Sarah and I.

In the eyes of a Jedi Warrior (I.e. Elite rider Emily Underwood)
As someone who has become Star Wars obsessed these past few weeks, I thought this ride was a lot like being a Padawan Learner (a Jedi in training). Today was the maiden flight of my Trek bike. With the support of a stellar squadron we flew though the flats of NJ at warp speed. We encountered an imperial fleet of storm troopers resembling 4 legged Wookies that chased us from someone's drive way. We fought off the dark side by smooth pace-lining and my new Trek flying across the road as smooth as a light saber cutting through a Sith Lord.
At the end of the ride our Jedi training was complete and made the Force stronger with the ladies of Ripetide Cawes. I became comfortable on my bike thanks to the Yoda of bike shops, Brielle Cyclery. Let the light side guide us safely through 2016!
