Race Dates: May 23-26th
Race Type: Mountain bike race and Enduro
Location: Marysville, PA
Rider: Jessica Kutz
Over the holiday weekend I participated in the Transylvania Epic 3-Day Stage race. This is the first year of the event, a tag along to the Epic 7 Day Stage race. The race takes place just outside of State College so the trails are basically most my home turf (even if I rarely ride some of them…the terrain is all the same here). 2 days were cross-country style races and the last day consisted of all enduro segments. During the cross-country segments there are also enduro segments. An enduro segment is a separately timed, mostly downhill and very technical. We all wore timing chips, one quickly pauses before the segment to scan and then scans out at the end of the segment.
Stage 1: Jessica Kutz 2nd place overall and in the Enduro
Stage 2: Jessica Kutz 1st place
Stage 3: Jessica Kutz 1st place segements 1 and 2
OVERALL Jessica Kutz 1ST PLACE!
Race Dates: May 25, 2014
Race Type: CENTURY+
Location: Blacksburg, Virginia
Rider: Bonni Schervone
This event was based in Blacksburg, Va. - home of Virginia Tech. The ride was 102 miles with 10,000 feet of climbing. The ride started at 7 am with 5 waves to spread everyone out. I was in wave 5. 100 riders per start. I had trained since March1st with a group of 8 from the area. The two fast boys went ahead...I started with two other women, but the pace was not working for me...I quickly realized I was going to be riding alone...a long day ahead, but I had to pace myself... At mile 60 came the first real challenge. It was a 2.5 mile climb at a 12-17% grade. I felt great during that climb. Most of the ride was rolling...nothing that technical. I was doing great until mile 95...I was mentally and physically exhausted after all day alone..no one to draft, chat with, etc. I looked at my garmin. 8000 feet down...the hardest part was yet to come. The final stretch ends with a 4 mile 12-16% grade to the finish. It took every ounce of energy I had not to quit. I had trained so hard for this....My goal was to ride this event in under 8 hours of real ride time. The final 2 miles were very difficult...I had to walk a few times and take breaks...In the end, I was able to finish...much stronger than I had even hoped for. Ride time was 7:39! So proud I finished, even with walk time....I came in 3rd out of 8 from our group...Overall results from the event had me in the mid-pack group. I"ll take that!! Coming from flat NJ and learning to climb, and being right in there with a pretty elite group...it was a great day. It was one of the hardest events I've ever done...esp. the last 4 miles...

The Tour of Somerville Cycling Series was in full swing this weekend. The series includes three races over the Memorial Day weekend! The 1st race of the series is the Raritan Classic and EPS rider Deborah Leedale-Brown took part in this race among some of the best women cyclists in the US! Deb had an very impressive 5th place finish on a gorgeous racing day!
The Tour of Somerville was the 3rd race of the series and this year marked the return of a Pro/1/2 Women's race!! The race had an amazing turnout. The Memorial Day extravaganza drew 55 women in the Pro/1/2 race and spectators lining the course. The course was a great 4-corner, flat, fast course. Our field had a 20 mile race which, due to its NCC Crit status, attracted some great talent from all over the world. As usual, the race came down to a sprint finish. After getting recognized as one of the major contenders in the race by getting a "call up" at the start of the race Colleen was only 2 wheels behind the United Healthcare lead-out train and placed 9th. Deborah got caught behind a crash on the last lap but managed to use her mountain bike skills to bunny hop some equipment and pull out a 20th place, earning her a spot in the money. Special thanks to Andy, Barb, and Ken who were there to enthusiastically support us and cheer us on. Our next race will be the Parx Casino race in Philadelphia.

EPS rider Jessica Kutz headed down to Maryland this weekend to take on her second mountain bike race of the year!! Not only did Jessie rock it out in the dirt but she did so well she qualified to take part in the National Mountain Bike Championships in Pennsylvania later this year!!! Way to go Jessica!!
Check out Jess's thoughts on her weekends activities!!
From Jessica Kutz's perspective.... "This weekend I hit the road and went south to race one of my favorite early season races in Maryland- the Greenbrier MTB race. This was a national’s qualifier so I was really hoping to have a good day. Usually this race is super early in the season (April) but this year it got pushed back to May…which is good for me since I am just kicking off my season. After a minor mishap going over the bars during our local single-track race in State College on Tuesday (note: I still have not developed the skills to fly- such a shame), I was mostly healed up and ready to race! I raced in the women’s open Cat 1 field. There were actually wayyyyy more cat 1 women racing however many chose to race in their age group to ensure a qualification for nationals (rock on ladies!) I’m currently lacking the confidence to go right from the gun so my start was eh…actually really eh considering I might have been in almost last going up the start climb. But once we got going I used the ladies in front of me as motivation to start riding hard. The course is rocky with LOTS of climbing…the steep kind that makes you really want a lower back massage after (nope didn’t get one of those- but I did have a burrito! Good enough). Thanks to Mother Nature we also had some really muddy conditions- my favorite, I’m a mudder! I rode my way up to 4th by the end of the 1st lap. I spent the next lap hanging on and deciding my next move. It’s nice in a mountain bike race if you can make a move that will get you out of sight from the racers you are with- “out of sight out of mind” really tends to work to your advantage in the woods. We dropped a rider on lap two so I was left with a woman (also named Jessica) and then another rider way up in front. I focused on riding smooth and made my move to get out of sight right away in lap three and was able to stay away for the final lap. WHOOHOO 2nd for the day, which qualifies me for nationals (in PA late July) WOOT! I’m not going to lie- I’m hungry for the win in the Cat 1 race. Ginny, a youngster, has finished in front of me the last two weekends. Stay tuned as we duke it out next weekend while we race the Transylvania Mountain Bike Epic 3-day stage race! Looking forward to #singletracksummercamp as the promoters call it, I know better…it will be a killer hard race. Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll have a fast new whip to race on by then!
