Race: AZ SeniorOlympics 20K and 40K Road Races/ Road Races
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Rider: Jo Johnson
Result: 20k 2nd
My competition this day would be the current USAC National Champion TT and RR in my age group. A challenge for sure.
For the 20k Race;
All the women from age group 50+ took off together. The route is 6 miles out on a flat to rolling route with the first big hill coming just after the turn around. The paceline of 6 included 3 Strada team members, the National Champion, myself and one other rider. Just after the turn around we climb back on a nice hill with the National Champion riding this hill like it was a flat road. Yikes. The rest of us, except for one other Strada younger rider, tried to hang on but very shortly the 2 riders were in the distance. I and another Strada rider, the gal who nipped me yesterday, were able to separate ourselves from everyone else and kept a nice steady paceline until the last turn around and then a sprint for the line which she won but she was not in my age group. But it was great practice.
For the 40k Race;
About 30 minutes later, the 40k starts. The same course is down and back 2 times. The race pattern continued, on the hill after the 6 mile turn around the National Champion was going and up the road quickly, riding solo. I and the Strada rider were on our own pace throughout. I felt really strong and could carry the pace longer but at the last turn coming to the finish line I was able to stay behind her and let her lead me out. Then I sprinted and got to throw my bike. This was good practice as she is a really good sprinter. I crossed 1 second in front of her. And a second place in my age group. I will meet this gal again in the next crit.
