Race: Bear Mountain Spring Classic
Location: Harriman State Park, NY
Riders: Andy Maher, Nikki Ragonese
It was a cold and dreary morning as we pulled into Lake welch. Riders Nikki Ragonese and Andy Maher were representing Team Riptide-Cawes. The Bear Mountain course is a rolling 14 mile loop around Harriman state park in NY.
The forecast called for rain and right on cue the heavens opened! Thankfully we were able to warm up on our trainers under a covered area and at least stay dry before the race. My race started first and Nikki with the Cat 4 field followed about five minutes later. The start was neutral. After a two mile descent with a 180 degree hairpin turn at the bottom the race flags were waved and we were under way. The steady rain kept the pace nice and easy with no breaks or attacks on the first lap. About 20 miles in the rain started coming down harder. I had made the decision not to wear glasses and I was having difficulty keeping my eyes open as the rain pelted my face. Shivering and teeth chattering we pressed on. The rain finally started to let up as we entered the third and final lap. As we neared the end of the Tiorati climb three riders attacked, there was now a gap and the chase was on. We worked seamlessly together in a pace line and by the time we reached the end of 7 Lakes Drive had caught the three riders. With about 5k to go two riders attacked on the final incline. Unable to chase them down I found my self with a small group heading into the field sprint and crossed the line in 8th place.
