We had a plan. So did the weather. May decided to descend upon the NJ region with chilly temps and steady rain. But, we still had a plan. The plan for today was simple... and a little diabolical. Go from the gun to try to make a 2 woman break stick with Meredith while Danielle patrolled the field for Cat 4 Cup points. This move, I lovingly refer to as "The Swope" after former Riptide rider Kristy Swope, who took the win at the Hellertown Crit in 2007 with a monstrous attack from the gun!
We went... we got away for a little over a lap, but were chased down by a fresh and determined field. So, we regrouped and decided that we would launch a few one-pronged attacks to wear people down before trying again for a two-fer. I said that I would go first... when we came up to the top of the little hill on the course, I jumped. When I looked back, I had a solid gap and just kept going. One rider, Emily Chan from CRCA/Houlihan-Lokey, jumped across the gap early and got to my wheel. We stayed together for a few laps and we had a solid lead on the field, but an attack up the hill opened up another gap, and I was solo with 14 laps to go!
I managed not only to hold off the field - with my teammates keeping a lid on any additional attacks - but to lap them with just 2 to go.
There was a miscommunication of epic proportions on course behind me as the moto ref told the field to neutralize and not chase me when I passed. Even though a bell was rung for the last lap, the moto ref continued to tell them to back off from my wheel and neutralize. This led to a confusing finish in which quite a large portion of the field did not sprint for the line. This put Meredith finishing 5th and Danielle in 10th - all of us bringing home a bit of cash for the kitty!! And, of course, we brought home the top step of the podium!
Thanks to friends Ron Short and Will Rivas for the wonderful photos!
