Race: Bob Riccio Memorial Tour de Pitman/Circuit Race
Location: Pitman, NJ
Rider(s): Alli, Danielle, Maria
The Tour de Pitman is a circuit race found in Pitman, NJ and hosted by the Caffeinated Cyclist. The Women's Cat 4 race was the first of the day making for a much less humid and cool temperature. As the course officials started closing off the main street, riders started warming up on the 3 mile loop that we would race on for 6 laps. The start line was placed on fast, flat double lane road that we could use all of for about 0.5 miles before the yellow line rule kicked in. The roads were rough and bumpy, but well marked with orange spray paint. About 1.5 miles in was the first hill, not terrible, but definitely painful and a spot to make breaks from. This was followed by a gradual downhill with a sweeping turn into a gradual uphill (this was also another good spot to make a move) Coming into the final turn on the course was a small incline, but with a small downhill before it you have enough momentum to power through the turn.
The race started off FAST! A break away started from the get-go, but we kept them within sight before chasing them down at the end of the first lap. Every team took turns sitting on the front, hammering the pace and attacking at various points throughout the course. With 2 laps to go 2 very strong riders got away and created a 30 second gap between themselves and the main peloton. Alli decided she might be able to catch them and got to the front in the last lap and pulled as hard as she could. She closed 15 seconds on them, but was running out of gas once she hit the first hill. Maria immediately jumped in front of her and said "come on!" and pulled her up the hill. Alli recovered behind Maria for the gradual downhill through the sweeping turn and then attacked on the gradual uphill until the very end for a 1st in the field sprint and 3rd place overall. Danielle rode strong and pushed herself hard the whole race. It couldn't have happened without our team work!
Alli - 3rd
Maria - 10th
