It was a hot day out in Amish country for this 25-mile road race on rolling terrain. We found ourselves surrounded by farm fields and the occasional horse and buggy! After a long warmup Andy and I headed to the staging area to wait for the race to start. It was moving at a pretty quick pace right from the beginning. I hung toward the back to get a feel for the field. In the second lap I started to move up and bit and I noticed to riders quickly sneaking up the side of the field looking to break away. I jumped on their wheels determined to either bring them back or go with them if I could. I was able to pull them back to the field and stayed up front with them for the rest of that lap.
There were two short but steep climbs right before the start finish line which strung the field out each time. On the third lap, I dropped back to Andy and after a quick discussion I decided to try to launch my own attack just to see if I had the legs and to see if I could get anyone to come with me. I didn’t get very far and wound up just coming back and doing some work on the front for a while. I dropped back again. On the fourth lap, the heat and the work got the better of me and when we came to the hill right before the start finish I popped off of the back with a small group of others. There were about six of us behind that worked together to try to catch back on to the field. As the lap went on we went quickly from six riders, down to four and then by the end only three of us remained. Andy hung with the main group and finished in a strong 6th place, while I came in 14th. It was definitely a great race on a fun and beautiful course and despite the fact that I lost it a bit at the end I felt good and tried to create some action in the field.
