Date: March 19, 2016
Race: Philly Phlyer: Individual Time Trial
Location: City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, PA
Rider(s): Sarah Iepson
The course was nice - a quick left turn taking you down a hill to West River Drive (it's actually Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, but all Philly die-hards will eternally call it West River). A u-turn near the museum sees you heading all the way back down the drive. Another u-turn back toward the start/finish area. ANOTHER u-turn back towards the far end of the drive. And, yes, ANOTHEr u-turn to get you back to the hill up to the finish. A flat 250 meter sprint to the finish and, we're done.
So, we shall play the good news/bad news game in relation to this race.
Good News: I was really excited for the first race of the season.
Bad News: Winter was excited about it too and came back to town for a 40 degree temperature start. Brrrrr....
Good News: My new pedals came in just in time for me to test them out at the race.
Bad News: I tested them out by not being able to clip in for the first 50 meters!!
Good News: I knew the course well and could pace myself accordingly.
Bad News: I knew the course well so I knew how bad that last climb was going to hurt!
Good news: At only 11 miles, the race should be less than 30 minutes of pain.
Bad News: The race was ACTUALLY 12.5 miles in length...
All in all, it was a good day on the bike! I felt good in terms of my position, thanks to Clarence at Brielle Cyclery. My legs were on form and the headwinds weren't too bad in either direction along the river. The results weren't posted at the site right away, as they were gearing up for circuit races in the afternoon. Since I was frozen solid, I left...waiting for the results to be posted online. I felt like I had done well, even passing a couple of guys during the 12.5 mile race. As I was getting ready for bed, the results were finally posted online. Much to my surprise, I'd done much better than I thought. Top 20 overall (men and women) and I'd WON the women's race!
