Race: Course de Evesham-Marlton-Evesham, aka Greentree
Location: Cherry Hill, NJ
The weather was perfect for racing, with temps hovering just above 70 degrees when we started. A small but determined field of women set out for a race around my home course!
As usual, I went to the front at the start and set a nice tempo... riders pulled through and we did the first few laps at a nice status quo. After about 5 laps, I launched one attack after the first turn. Jen Rhodes of Team Skyline and Robin Wahl from Pro Pedals came with me, and the other riders soon chased back on. We settled back in for a few more laps.
As we saw 9 to go, I decided it was time for another attack. I waited until right before the final corner and launched on the uphill headwind section of the course. I got some daylight and saw a rider coming across to me. Iliana Rabun-Wood from Pink Rhino Racing got up to my wheel and we committed to the move. We shared the work for the remaining laps, building a solid gap over the chase group. With two to go, I began to plan my final attack of the day - I wasn't sure of Iliana's sprinting ability, but I wanted to make sure that it didn't come down to that! Just before the final corner of the last lap, I launched again and was able to open up a gap to the finish line for the win.
I then hopped in the Men's 45+ race and felt great up until there was a little crash in the first corner of the final lap! Ugh!! I pedaled in for a finishing place, but wasn't happy with not having the chance to go to the line with all the boys! Next time!
