I woke up on the morning of the race and was still contemplating texting Teresa that I wasn’t going to race. I had gotten sick after Baker’s dozen and was at my worse the days leading up to the first Cranky Monkey race. Brad convinced me to given it a go, the worse that could happen would be that I’d drop out. Once I made it to the race my attitude changed, Teresa and Maria were both there and it’s so rare for me to have teammates around and immediately I was excited to race! I was unsure how my stomach would handle the exercise so I started off conservative. My legs felt great even though I had only been on my bike twice in the previous two weeks, so I was well rested. The trails were a ton of fun, though a little slick in spots! I almost took a spill on the first lap but luckily caught myself. I felt pretty good the whole day and Teresa, Maria and LJ were helping me in the pit area. I felt good to ride but I was worried about really pushing it, as my stomach wasn’t all there. I was riding a pretty good pace for the day, but unfortunately for me there was another woman in attendance who was absolutely crushing it. For the first 3 laps, she was riding about 5-6 minutes faster per lap. This made sense as LJ said she wasn’t stopping in the pit like I was and I wasn’t pushing it on any sections. I thought about going for it but I was more concerned my stomach would give out on me if I went any faster. She rode consistently the whole day and I faded in the last three laps. I had a strong second place finish but it sucks to not try and duke it out for first place. I’ve been having some knee issues lately after going for a run (reasons why I shouldn’t try to run!) but I’m hoping to be back on the bike soon and am looking forward to Cranky Monkey #2!
