Location: Rowan College, NJ
Date: July 6, 2014
Type: Cross Country Mountain Bike Race
Participants: Laura Carlson
This weekend's mountain bike race in New Jersey was in southern New Jersey, far from the rocky hills of the northwest part of the state where many of the races take place. This made for very different terrain: primarily small power climbs, roots, bridge crossings, and a lot of twisting turning single track. Surprisingly the race included one small rock section, and plenty of technical sections.
The category three race did not start until 12:30, so it was pretty hot. Typically the category three race is one lap, but since the course was short, this time it was two laps for a total of nine miles. Laura did not get a chance to pre-ride any of the course since racing was already underway, so she looked forward to the chance to do the lap twice. Once the horn sounded for the eight women in the pack it was easy to see who was in contention. Laura got into the woods third for a good start. Every turn had a surprise: a dip, quick snaky turn, short rooty climb or bridge! After almost completing a lap, Laura passed one of the women with a flat walking her bike. With about two miles to go, Laura was almost passed on a steep rooty climb by the woman in third, but succeeded in keeping the pressure on and not giving any room to pass on the remaining single track. They sprinted for the line, but Laura kept her second place finish!
