Race: Emrick Boulevard Criterium
Location: Bethlehem, PA
Rider: Evelyn Korbich
The morning of the Emrick Boulevard Criterium dawned sunny and hot as I warmed up for my 20 mile race around the flowing, 3 corner course. A fair number of Women’s Open and Cat 4 racers were racing so it started out fast, with the higher categories trying to slim down the field a little. Since I was racing without teammates in this event I decided that it was wisest to sit in and let other riders do the work at the front. I was following my plan pretty well until I found myself on the front for the fast downhill corner at a moment when I was feeling good. I pushed the pace just enough to accidentally let a few very strong riders separate from the pack and wasn’t able to follow their speed when they passed me. Within seconds they had a clean break from the pack. There were four away originally but one dropped off the break and came back to the group. There we sat, holding between eight to ten seconds of gap between us and the break for a few laps before they picked up the pace again and stretched the lead to near 30 seconds. At that point we had about five laps to go and it became a race for fourth with a few teammates testing the sprinting waters and keeping the pace high. I was trying to stay towards the front to make sure that no lead out trains got away without me but was unsuccessful at catching hold of the one that did form. In the final stretch I took the inside line but misjudged a riders speed and ended up getting forced to come around the far outside to sprint for 9th overall and 7th in the Women’s Open.
