The day of the Farmersville Road Race dawned warm, sunny, and extremely windy. It was in this wind that I and 21 other women prepared to race 4 laps of a 6.7 mile circuit on the beautiful, rolling roads of Brownstown, PA. I went into the race with a goal to be on the front for the rolling backstretch in order to string out the pack and hopefully come out with a small breakaway. Luckily, I had been on the front at the start so I was in a perfect position to pick up the pace on the hills. The first lap didn’t drop too many riders but on the second time around I pushed the pace just a little faster and ended up with a break of 4 towards the end of the hills. We were working together when, all of a sudden, the rider on the front accelerated so quickly that we didn’t know what hit us. As the pack caught up to us, we watched her ride away and someone yelled out “Don’t let her get away, she’s a time trial champion!” True to those words she stayed away for the remaining 2.5 laps and finished with a lead of over a minute and a half. The rest of us, 9 at that point, began a rotating pace line which lasted until we hit the hills again. At that point, I and 2 other riders broke away and quickly widened our gap. We worked together well and were soon out of sight of the group. We stayed away for the rest of the race and were soon coming into the final, headwind-y sprint. I sat at the back so when one of the ladies sprinted around the 400 meter mark I was able to go with her and jump around at 200 meters to go. I was able to hold off the other riders, who were close on my wheel, to take 2nd place in the race.
