Granogue is a legendary event held on the 400 acre Dupont Estate in Wilmington DE; the fact that it was not held for a couple of years probably has made the race even more legendary. Laura Carlson was convinced once she heard there was to be a Mater’s Women’s Category, so she signed up for the 40+. The 40+ was combined with the 50+ women’s field, starting one minute before the Women’s 3-4 field.
The day was perfect, although a little warm for cyclocross, but the race was in the morning when the grass was still damp and the air not too hot for racing. The course included two hard climbs, one that ended up to be a “run up” for most (too steep and rutted to ride), lots of off camber switchbacks, barriers, one mud section, and everybody’s favorite photo opp, the turn around the tower.
Laura had a decent start and did well at the first hill, but lost some time on the wet off camber grass. She made up time on the run up, opting to ride as far as possible, the dismount on the “wrong” side of the bike for a quicker re-mount on the steep slope at the top. She did her best to stay with the three leaders who were in the 50+ category, and held this position in the Master’s field for first place in the 40+ category!
Team Results: Laura Carlson 1st Women's 40+
Laura Carlson 1st place 40+ women
Laura Carlson 8th in a combined field of Masters and 3/4 Women
