Event: Gravel Grape Crusher
Date: April 1, 2017
Location: Ladenburg, PA
Riders: Teresa DiSessa and Alli McCabe
Alli and Teresa decided to kick off the season with a gravel grinder. This was the first year the Gravel Grape Crusher was held. It started at Paradox Vineyards in PA and looped down into Delaware where riders got to take gravel roads and single track through White Clay State Park and Fair Hill in MD.
It had rained heavily leading into the day causing for very muddy conditions, but the atmosphere starting the ride was full of smiling faces and plenty of kind, funny people ready to push through the elements together. The ride started with roughly 7 miles of road including some tough hills to wake up our legs.
As we entered the off road sections I found it harder and harder to turn the pedals. Suddenly the energy I had was draining from my body. When we made it to the rest stop one of the guys we were riding with noticed my wheel was off centered and was being seized by the brakes. He fixed this quick and we were off. Unfortunately, due to the wheel issue, I was drained and our 50 miles became 35 miles and 2500ft of climbing.
Teresa and I, as well as other teammates, will be competing in the Whiteface 100k in June so this ride was the perfect start to experiencing what long off road miles will feel like. It was a well put together day and I would highly recommend this ride to others!
