This will be the second year Team EPS/CSS p/b Shebell & Shebell does Rider Profiles on Wednesdays through the winter months. HOWEVER this year we are going to start off with a special story that developed over the course of the 2016 season for our team and one of it's members in particular. Let me introduce you to Barbara Statton. Barb is the best teammate anyone could ask for! Barb is the ultimate support for every rider on this team from the Cat 4s to Cat 1s! Barb is always ready to jump in and help the team in anyway possible and these are just some of the reasons Barb has won the Riptide-Cawes award (which is voted on by team members) a number of times over her time with the team! To say we all love Barb would not even come close to express how we feel about her.
In the early months of 2016 the team was shocked to find out Barb had been diagnosed with cancer. Barb had found a lump behind her ear a few months prior and her doctors said it needed to be removed immediately. Barb underwent a very successful surgery and has since recovered and is back on the bike and is back training with her teammates!!! We asked Barb a few questions about this moment in her life...
What helped you to stay focused on the positives of life?
Knowing that no matter what the situation, I believe staying positive and minimizing the negative get you through the tough times. It can be easy to get caught up in the negativity, but that doesn’t help you get to the finish line, it only make the line farther away.
What have you learned about yourself and others through this journey?
I have learned that the tremendous gift of friendship can get you through anything!
What motivated you to get back on the saddle?
I have always loved the bike, while I may not be racing, my love for the bike has not diminished. I have expended that to include mountain biking.
We love you so much Barb and we are so happy you are feeling better and back on the bikes with us!!!
