As told by Deborah
So the unseasonal cold weather of spring loosened its grip for this weekend and presented us with cloudless blue skies and temps in the mid 70's, couple that with a stacked talented womens pro 1/2/3 field, and it made for some fun, fast, quality racing.
We were unfortunately missing our powerhouse Meredith due to illness, but we did not let that change our plans to use our newly formed women power to throw down some strategic attacks and careful monitoring of key riders. The goal was to entice or be part of a strong breakaway, or contest what would be a hot field sprint and either way earn a place on the podium. It was a relatively short race on a fast non-technical 4 corner course, only 19 laps! The pace started out strong for the first 8 or so laps team Riptide-Cawes made sure that we had the front of the race covered pretty much at all times and launched a number of attacks in the hope that something would stick for a breakaway. The pace seemed to slow a little in the last 3rd of the race but it was important that our riders kept up the work effort and made sure that nothing got away. As we headed into the final 3-4 laps it was evident that it would come down to a field sprint and so we had a plan to achieve a good position and form a lead out. As we rounded the 2nd to last corner we had our sprinters where we needed them to be as we approached the final corner before the sprint finish. A slight misjudgement on my part had me come off my team mates wheel a little too early and then have to work to get back on, this just stung my legs enough to then come around her at the line. 1st and 2nd place were being duked out by two quality top flight riders and our team was right there. I shouted to Emily to go once I knew I was staying in her slipstream and then just covered and came in behind her.
It was a fun race, and to see our merged team of riders all showing such a positive work ethic towards each other was amazing, and bodes extremely well for the season ahead. Can't wait for next weekend When even more of us don the Orange, Green & Blue and see what we can do.
