![]() Race Date: April 2th, 2014 Race Type: Mid-West Conference Regional Road Race Location: West Lafayette, IN Riders: Hannah Hayduk Report by Hannah Hayduk... This past weekend I competed near West Lafayette, IN in the Mid-West Conference Regionals. The race started relatively calm and after a mile got to the hill. While not the biggest and worst of hills in the conference, it starts out as a slight incline and kicks up as you get up. No longer than 1km, I could tell that Marian was pushing the pace a little just to see who would be up there. I also figured it was where they would make their attack on the future 5 laps. I was right. The following lap the break went. I was in the chase group. We got caught, as there was a pretty nasty head wind at the top. In the field, 8 of us left, we pacelined the following laps. Slowly but surely we dropped two girls. I was happy we worked together and made the race go by quicker rather then play around. This was an open course and very windy. On the final lap, on the final straight away, probably about 500m, I found myself excited to sprint. We approached the finish line with increasing speed. When i saw a group of people, which I thought was the finish line get close enough, I jumped to the right side to stay protected from the wind if anyone passed. As we sprinted to the end, I realized 1) I am still in front (yayayay) but 2) that was a group of Marian teammates and not the judges at the finish line. Whoops! I set my mind to keep going because there was no stopping now. Unfortunately before the finish line, one of the Marian girls passed me (we were sprinting for 5th) but I am proud to say I held off everyone else. I am very happy with how my sprint and endurance are coming around. I ended up 6th overall. Not bad for a criterium race . Now time to put my legs up and rest before the individual time trial at nationals in Richmond, VA on Friday....or work an 8 hour shift, help with an EMT class, make an emergency run before a storm rolls through, and do some homework for tomorrow...and write this race report. The wonderful life of a student-athlete-employee. I love it. Race Results: Hannah Hayduk-6th place Comments are closed.
