Race: Mount Joy Road Race
Location: Mount Joy, PA
Rider: Evelyn Korbich
Saturday’s Mount Joy Road Race lined up with a good number of category 3 and 4 women, plus a smattering of junior boys and girls, prepared to do four laps on the rolling course out in the farm country of PA. Rolling, that is, until you come to the wall of a hill halfway through the lap. We started out at a slow pace but I soon went to the front to speed up the pace and try to loosen up my legs. We stayed together at a steady pace until the hill when a few people went to the front and strung out the pack a bit. We came back together afterwards and stayed at the same steady pace for another 1.5 laps, with the speed only picking up as the stronger riders went to the front on the hills.
As we came through the finish line with two laps under our wheels, I went to the front and rotated through with two other ladies for the next half lap. The rest of the field was doing very little to help the rotation and used their rested legs to make a move on the hill. Four riders got off the front and I was in a chase group of three that caught them on the long, tailwind stretch not far from the finish line. The seven of us worked together fairly well and managed to stay away from any other chasers. The small group shattered just a bit when someone pushed the pace on the last time up the climb but we came back together soon enough. As we came closer to the finish I moved towards the front few riders, sitting 3rd wheel as we went around the final turn. Then it was 1km to go and everyone was getting antsy. Someone jumped in front of me and I got on her wheel. Around the 300 meter mark I tried to come around the leader but didn’t have the power to keep up the sprint and was passed by most of the group just before the finish line. I managed to secure a 6th place and had so much fun with the race!
Result: 6th (Women 3/4)
