Race: Musselman Honda Circuit Crit/Crit
Location: Tucson, AZ
Date: March 10, 2017
Rider(s): Jo Johnson
March winds continue to blow across this one mile circuit. A great go kart track with smooth surface and different loops to challenge cornering skills. The inner loops are a small replica of the F1 Japanese course and would be a favorite technical course. However the 1 mile loop for today is a new outer loop with an off camber wide last turn heading up a slight grade to the SF line. The loop has a few turns from the SF line then sweeping up a slight grade to another sweeper to the back straight which leads to the tricky turn with a push to the line. The women are in different age groups and some are racing the 3 day Omnium. Represented are 5 year age groups from 45+. Registration arrives with 45 minutes before first race is scheduled which I am scheduled for. With a quick 20 minute warm up, I then head for the line. My goals are to hang with the main group as long as I can plus see how many younger gals I can catch and pass. The race starts off with a fast paced group which continues to accelerate each lap. I am able to stay with them to the 4th lap then fall off the pace as does several others. Now focus on catching those others. In another few laps, I am able to catch one of the gals on the back stretch. For some reason I can push the pace to about 25-27 mph into the crosswind on this stretch. Then set sights on another rider and pass her, then there is another spunky rider to reel in. I finally pass her with about 8 laps to go. I just stay ahead of her but loose a bit with 3 laps to go and she passes me back. I am unable to catch her. But finish feeling good, objectives met. And met a new friend from St Louis, MO.
Thank you to all our sponsors who make this fun possible and to Teresa DiSessa Johnson for keeping it all together.
Result: 1st in age group 70.
