Race: Regional Masters Track Championship
Location: Trexlertown, PA
Rider: Jo Johnson
What a fantastic time. Very windy on Saturday but the sun was shining both days. Saturday was the Omnium Competition which included 4 races; Flying One Lap, 2K TT, Points race with sprints every 6 laps, and Scratch race. I was the second rider to be pushed off for the Flying One Lap so up and into the wind coming across from turn 4 into turn 3, then the wind swirled down the back straight and to turn 2. That meant headwind on most of the track!! Even so, I put down a good time and was only .4 seconds off my PB. Then we switch to TT handlebars and set up and soon out again for the 2K TT. I have a standing start departure from the front straight and although it is not a great start, I gain speed standing and get into aero position at turn 3. I am comfortable and working hard. A few gusts of wind make it slightly difficult to hold the black line but I feel good throughout the effort. Now wait for the official time. It is time to change back to drop bar and mass start saddle position and gear too. Next up is the Points race against 7 of us. Thank goodness the youngsters 35-45 are in a separate group. Finally, race starts, I feel good and hang in ok leading a lap or 2 in the middle of the race. Afterward, a few suggestions from the Coach for the next race and I spin a bit to recover then sit down and rest for the next race. The last race on Saturday is the 15 lap Scratch race. I go out and stay in the front about 5th wheel and move up and back between 3rd and 5th the entire race. With 2 laps from the end, I position myself in 5th spot right behind the 3rd and 4th riders. The 1st and 2nd riders are way ahead and I know I will not catch them. These riders move up slightly coming out of turn 4 and I see an opening down track and jump past them for all it is worth. I make it around them quickly, I can hold them off for 2 laps I think. So I keep it going as hard and fast as I can go into the bell lap and push harder. Yes, I cross the line in 3rd and win my age group too. What a great result. My highest place in this competition.
Now it is recover and race the next day.
Sunday is cooler and a bit cloudy. Perfect. I am the first rider off for the Flying 200 meter TT. I feel good, anxious a bit though. I take off and wind it up feeling quick and in control. Crossing the line I am carrying speed down the back straight a bit further before I can slow down and get off the track. That felt good. I change gear again for the Match Sprint race coming next and it is the last race of the weekend. When the time comes, I draw the Number 1 so I choose where I start on the track with the other rider above me. I ride my plan, and move quickly into the lead but watching where the opponent is and keep her blocked from coming around me. On the bell lap, i now have a slight gap and start sprinting very quickly and am able to stay ahead for the sprint win.
