Sandy Hook is traditionally the kick-off to the NJBA Time Trial Cup Series, and is known for crazy weather. This year, 4 of us were ready to test out our legs and see how our winter training has gone. Andy Maher is on the come-back after an accident, hunting for the form that lead her to so many time trial victories. Nicole LaGorga is recovering from a long bout of illness this winter. Bobbie Mach was on her super-fancy new Cannondale SuperSix Evo (nicknamed "Obi Wan Shinobi"), and had her fan club (er, children) in tow. And I (Sue Seyboldt), was giving the Eddy category a go after nothing but pain and frustration on a real TT bike in previous years.
The rain started just as we were all making our final preparations for the race. Luckily, this year the winds were calm, and the temperature was tolerable. Andy and Nicole were off before Bobbie and I, with Bobbie starting one minute ahead of me. My start went well, and I quickly settling into a comfortable race pace. I caught my 30 second women quickly, and could see Bobbie in the distance. I did everything I could to push as hard as possible, and keep my mental state tough (I'm famous for negative self-talk during these races). At the turn-around, I tried to mark my time against Bobbie and it looked like I had made up a few seconds on her. I kept her in my sights, even as I caught her 30 second women. At that point, I knew all I had to do was stay strong and I would be in the hunt for the win. I kept Bobbie in my sight whenever the road allowed, but just couldn't reel her in. We had to wait in the steadily increasing rain for the results to be posted, but in the end, Bobbie pulled out a really strong second half and won by 10 seconds. I knew I had given it all I had, so I am very happy with my 2nd place.
Bonus: the entire team went home with medals!
Andy Maher: 3rd, Women's Open
Nicole LaGorga: 3rd, Women's Cat 4
Bobbie Mach: 1st, Women's Eddy
Susan Seyboldt: 2nd, Women's Eddy
