Race: Santa Catalina Omnium, Historic Campus Crit/Criterium Race
Date: January 28, 2017
Location: Tucson, AZ

A quick, 30 minutes around the rectangle next to the mall on the University of Arizona campus. The course direction was reversed in order to make the last turn much safer, as it is a tight 75 degree turn from a merge lane onto the front straight. The direction is opposite the normal traffic pattern. From the S/F line it is a slight half degree downhill to the first turn then a quick continuous turn around the first and second corners leading to the back straight which is now slightly up grade and into the wind leading to the merge lane and the 75 degree last turn onto the front straight. All age groups lined up, 45+, 55+ and me in 65+. There were no 35+ gals. The race was off at noon and it was quick as expected. With a better clip in, I was able to hang with the gals for the first few laps, then as the fastest gals began to create separation from some of us, I began to hang with the gals off the back. Then at about half the race, I could hold the same gap from the group for a few more laps until I could not keep pace with them. Still came in tasting iron in my mouth and as I am getting over a cold, I was coughing a very dry throat when cooling down.
