Race Type: Criterium

This is the first criterium of the season here in Phoenix area and everyone is excited. Approx 400+ riders on hand with lots of prizes and primes. My goals
were to 1) test my bike handling 2) stay with the 40+ age group pack 3) use energy saving strategies 4) finish as high up as I can in the 50+ age group.
In an 0.8 mile course, there are two 90 degree turns, a long gradual 5% rise around a pond and into a hill with the second 90 degree turn leading to the long straight with S/F mid way down the road. Once off, I stayed in the back of the group until the 3rd lap when I began to feel stronger, more comfortable with the pack pace and began testing myself on the course moving in and out of the pack at various sections. The other riders seemed to do the same so there was alot of movement but no one was able to break away. The pack remained tight throughout the 30 minute race so I figured it would come down to a group sprint finish. But with two laps to go, 2 riders went for a break and I went with them and carried alot of speed into the first 90 degree turn and proceeded to lead the remainder of the lap. Now on the final lap, I was leading through the first turn but was caught on the back side and up the hill. Through the last turn onto the straight it became a group scramble and dash for the line a long way out. I did not have a great sprint at the end so next race I do not need to be in the lead with 2 laps to go but use patience and wait for the group sprint. As for my other goals, my handling was not bad but I can tighten that up, I was able to stay with the group, and I need to conserve energy until the last possible sprint.
