![]() Date: May 18th, 2015 Rider: Bonni Schervone Race/Ride: The Assault on Mount Mitchell Location: Spartanburg, South Carolina We started the day at 6:30 am in Spartanburg SC. The first 35 miles we got on a pace line train and enjoyed an avg of 20 mph. As soon as the real rollers started, our group had splintered. We entered Marion NC at mile 75. It was sunny, hot and 80 degrees. We had already climbed 5000 feet. We were told the last 30 miles would take us the same amount of time to complete as the first 75... 10 miles into our huge climb, the skies opened up. We had deluges of rain and thunder and 20 more miles up and up and up to go. It was a total head game not quitting and /or crying. There was no way I was quitting after all the training I had done with my friend Danielle. The slog continued. We finally reached the peak of Mt. Mitchell. 103 miles and 11,000 feet later. We were at 6400 feet of elevation- soaked, freezing, and totally content. Comments are closed.
