It was a beautiful crisp blue sky morning for this inaugral Bucks Co/ Doylestown Hospital women's invitational Criteruim. Although this town has many years history putting on a UCI men's race weekend this was the first opportunity for the women. The promoter indicated that with a good turnout this year the women could earn a road race too for 2015, so lets hope this comes to fruition.
Even though this was a late in the season race a strong women's field turned out that included the infamous Laura Van Gilder, Amy Cutler, Amber Pierce from Optum and a pack of Fearless Femmes looking to control the race.
The course was a technical and narrow 8 corner circuit that had steep descents and a long uphill finish. It was the sort I course that was going to encourage a breakaway and with 5 Fearless Femme riders a constant stream of attacked were expected. The race did not go off super fast but the tight corners and the long uphill saw many attacks and injections of pace. This was pretty much the order of the day as the race approached the last lap. A Fearless Femme rider was out front but was quickly being reeled in as the final corners approached. It ended in a tight bunched up field sprint as the Fearless rider was caught. With Laura Van Gilder taking charge, Amy Cutler and Colleen Hayduk were hot on her heels. It was Amy who crossed the line just ahead of LVG and Colleen in 3rd. The uphill separated the field sprint but all riders over the line were in bike contact of each other.
A great location and course, plenty of spectators who enjoyed the show the women put on, so here's hoping it becomes a fixture for 2015 along with a road race too.
