As America's longest running one day race, the Tour de Somerville is always something special and draws in many riders and teams from afar. This year it was celebrating its 73rd year and with the threat of tropical storm Bonnie dumping significant rain, race day was certainly going to be interesting. But as luck would have it, the rains seemed to never materialize and 42 women toed the start line. With a full squad of six riders racing it was always our plan to be super attentive in the race to make things happen, we had enough firepower to work for our strongest rider. We attacked tried to stick some breakaways, we bridged when riders were getting away and we led from the front on many occasions to keep the pace high and the race strung out. Towards the latter stages of the race one of the Cycle Opus riders did get way with a timed attack after a preme lap, with not enough riders working together it was clear that she was not going to be caught and therefore the focus was on a field sprint finish for the remainder of the podium spots. Somerville's finishing straight is super wide and super long so it was important to be at the front end of the race going into the last lap and ideally stringing it out around the final two corners to set up the lead out for the sprint. That almost happened faultlessly however the third turn is a tight turn and a lot of the teams were jostling for position, coming out to the final turn we still had Emily in a prime position to provide a lead out for Colleen, however when the road goes wide it often means a lot of the riders start to spread out across the whole road. Emily dug deep and put in all she had to take Colleen further towards the finish line, Colleen jumped off her wheel and joined the swarm of riders spread across the whole road. She sprinted for the line and ended up coming in 8th place. We were hoping for a slightly higher position but all in all it was a great race with a lot of fabulous team work taking place.
