Race: Velo Shop Criterium
Rider: Evelyn Korbich
It was brutally hot when women’s open and women’s 4 lined up on the loop of Rodale Park for the Velo Shop Criterium. We had a lot of day-of registrants so the field of 14 we had been expecting grew to almost 25. I started off in the front, just sitting on wheels and waiting for a move to be made. Then, just a few laps into the race things got fast and the strong riders, including myself, were busy pulling back moves on the front. One of the moves stuck and I watched with dread and heavy legs as two international riders got off the front and were caught by two more of the pack’s strongest riders. Then one more rider bridged up to them and I thought that we were toast for sure. But the pack worked together really well and with under 10 laps to go in the race we pulled them back. From that point on we hung together fairly well, with just a few jumps occurring as people got ready for the sprint. We went into the final lap as one group, just waiting for the final sprint to occur. I was sitting mid-pack but wasn’t able to pull anything out for the sprint so I just hung on and gave it my all to end up in 7th in the women’s open and top 10 overall.
