Race: White Plains Downtown Criterium - NY State Championship
Location: White Plains, NY
Rider(s): Emily, Meredith, Deborah, Sarah and Gabby
This course is just a few miles from Emily's house. She has raced here many times and knows the course like the back of her hand. In short, we had a plan for this one... win and get Emily in the NY State Champion jersey! Simple, right? WRONG! Race day brought with it some steep competition from Stan's No Tubes, H&H Racing, and professional team TIBCO, some wicked rainy weather, and a highly technical crit course that included four smooth turns, a rise between turn 2 and 3, and a rise up to the finish.
Emily had one job - sprint for the finish. The rest of us had the responsibility of watching every move that tried to get up the road, maybe grab a few primes, and lead Emily out for the final lap. The race went precisely to plan. Cheryl Clark went to the front and set a nice pace that kept things strung out and fast... Emily tested her legs on the finish straight and grabbed the first prime (a swag bag) of the day. A few laps later, Deborah went head to head for the line and grabbed a $25 prime. A few laps after that, they announced an $80 crowd prime, and Sarah took a nice final turn and an inside line to grab that one!
As the final lap drew near, the girls went to the front to set a strong pace. Sarah took to the front on the bell lap and drilled it through turns 1-2... setting the field and Emily up for a run to the line. As we took the final turn, Emily opened up a massive sprint and took the win!
This race was perhaps one of the finest examples of team tactics that we've enjoyed this year. We're becoming a finely oiled machine and LOVE working together and sacrificing for one another in these great races! Up next... The Historic Riverton Criterium in New Jersey!
