Race: Women's Woodstock Cycling Grand Prix
Location: Woodstock, NY
Rider: Danielle Ferland
Wanting to show my support to this wonderfully presented race, I decided to take to the hills once again for a challenging 34+ mile road race with 2,300+ ft of climbing in beautiful Woodstock, New York. Despite the gray skies and wet roads, I wanted to test myself in this women’s only race. With a neutral start for the 1st 4 miles giving an additional warm up, nearly 40 women for cat 4 took off at a brisk pace. I was able to stay with the pack as the 1st of two climbs which came about, around 16 miles in.
Powering up the steep but short hill, I managed to hang with the group up the hill, even though it took a lot out of me, and took me a minute to recover. This climb is where the field began to thin out. Around mile 26, steady climbing of about 1,100 ft of climbing for 2 miles began, and so did the questioning of my sanity for doing these things.
But! I made it safe, sound, without stopping, and keeping rubber-side down. I would definitely do this race again; the course was beautiful, well-marked and well-marshalled, not to mention food and massages were provided afterwards! A great start to any weekend.
